Maryuri

Maryuri will be 8 in June.  She could be in  3rd grade right now, but she has had a very difficult time getting the school thing down.  She is in 1st grade for another year.  Last year was very overwhelming to her, as I am sure being in a class with 50 other kids would be to any 1st grader.  She had a teacher that was very strict, and Maryuri was somewhat intimidated by all of it.  For the first several months of school, all she did was cry and plead Karen to not have to go one more day.

This year, Maryuri is much more accustomed to being in school.  She has been writing her letters very well, and getting her homework done very quickly, (and accurately).  She still has a little trouble with math, but realizing that she can in fact do school, has made her a much more confident child.  Last year on test days she normally did not put anything on the paper except maybe her name, this year we are hoping that she tries her best on tests.

This morning, Maryuri had an appointment with the psychologist at Teleton, and Maryuri beamed as I related her improvement in school from last year, as well as her improvement in behavior.  Please pray for my girl Maryuri as she tries in school, and as we try to work through some issues in her that provoke a very aggressive behavior at times.  Also, praise God about the changes he is already making in her life.

Things I've learned about Lice in the last month...

We have had lice.  That is something that most people don't want as public knowledge, but it has been a constant part of our life the past few weeks.  One of the girls at CdE almost always has lice, usually Cindy or Daniela.  All of the girls like to brush Haley's hair although I frequently ask them not to.  Plus all of the girls are her friends, the people she plays with on a daily basis.  Here are a few things that I have learned...
  • Stuffed animals and dolls can all get lice too.
  •  Listerine (only the original kind, not the blue, orange, or green  kinds) does a number on lice if you saturate your hair in it and put a bag on the hair for a minimum of two hours.  It kills some of the lice, and makes others so drunk that they are easy to get out.
  • It is very difficult to see eggs in Haley's hair, and even more difficult to get them out.
  • I think Haley, the girls here, and I have been passing it back and forth to each other, thus making it even more impossible to get out.
  • Matt is so disgusted at the idea of lice that he will neither let me check his hair for lice nor check mine.
  • Although kids here all know what lice and lice eggs look like, they are not very good at getting it out.  Ana swore to me that all the bugs were gone, and I just had dandruff, yet a couple days later, bugs were still in my hair.
  • It would be much easier if we were boys and could just shave our heads.
  • I really need to find a really good lice shampoo.

Haley getting treated for lice.  She hates it, but gets bribed with M&Ms to do it.
